The life of a dancer requires dedication and passion, as well as physical stamina, musicality and artistic potential. The Dance Program provides professional guidance, training and support through its inclusive ballet training program to support and nurture developing dancers. World-renowned instructors instill patience, tenacity and motivation, along with the necessary well-rounded technical and artistic development required for a program reflective of the 21st Century.

Dance Requirements


  • Ballet Workshop - 1.5 hours
  • Modern center practice - 30 minutes
  • All Residential High School applicants must also perform a solo showcasing the applicant's performing ability in Ballet, Modern, or Contemporary dance.
    • Each high school applicant performs a solo showcasing the applicantís performing ability in Ballet, Modern, or Contemporary dance.
    • The solo should be a maximum of two minutes in length.
    • The solo may be from the classical repertoire or it may be original choreography by the student or a teacher.
    • Applicants must provide a CD recording of the music for their performance. Please make sure your CD is readable by standard sound systems. (Support for iPod will not be provided.)
  • Interview - A panel of dance professionals will conduct an interview with each applicant (or small groups for summer programs) to assess the applicantís future goals and aspirations, his/her commitment to successfully complete the dance program, and his/her level of responsibility and potential as a student on a residential campus.

Audition Attire

  • Females should wear black leotards, convertible pink tights, ballet shoes. For the modern workshop, applicants must be barefoot (rolled up convertible tights).
  • Males should wear t-shirts, dance belts, black convertible black tights with black shoes or white socks and white shoes. For the modern workshop, applicants must be barefoot (rolled up convertible tights).

Dance Essay Question: Describe in 500-800 words why you want to study dance at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, where you see yourself 10 years from now, and how studying a the Governor's School will help you achieve your goal.
