High School Admissions Requirements

      Thank you for considering the Governor's School's Residential High School Program! Please read all of the details below carefully to ensure that you or your child are eligible and prepared to complete the admissions application.

      When To Apply By Grade Level 

      • Drama, Creative Writing, and Visual Arts apply and audition while in the 10th grade to attend in the 11th and 12th grades.
      • Dance students may apply in their 9th or 10th grade years to attend in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades. 
      • Music students apply in the 10th grade to attend in the 11th and 12th grades, but on occasion, the music program will accept students entering the 12th grade and especially talented and mature 9th grade students for the 10th grade Early Admissions program.

      Eligibility Criteria 

      All applicants must–

    • Satisfy requirements for legal residency in South Carolina 
    • Be identified as artistically talented 
    • Have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average or higher 
    • Possess a high level of commitment, motivation, and maturity
    • Program Application Deadline & Procedures

    • Applications must be completed and submitted by Wednesday, January 4, 2017. Applications completed and submitted by November 30, 2016 will have the application fee automatically waived.

    • Applications submitted after Wednesday, January 4, 2017, will be processed on a space available basis.

    • Candidates may apply for more than one art area, but may attend in only one.

    • Teacher recommendations must also be submitted by the above deadlines in order for your application to be considered complete. 
    • The Admissions Office will notify you if information is missing from his/her application. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

      • Applications require artistic and academic teacher recommendations. Academic recommendations should be completed by a teacher who has taught the student in the past term, and artistic recommendations can be submitted by a school arts teacher, community or professional director or educator, church fine arts or music director, or any other professional who has knowledge of the student's commitment and talent.
      • All applicants who submit a completed application by the deadlines will be scheduled for an audition appointment. Audition times and locations are available on a first come, first served basis.

      Application and Program Fees

      If the application is completed and submitted by November 30, 2016, then the application is free to complete. The final application deadline is January 4, 2017.  The application fee is $50 for each application submitted after November 30, 2016. For those in need of financial assistance, the Application Fee Waiver Form can be submitted instead of this fee.

      There is no tuition, as SCGSAH is a public high school.

      Additional Fees: Upon acceptance of an offer for admission, students must submit a $150 non-refundable residence hall fee to secure a place in the upcoming year's class. There is also a $3,450 annual food services fee paid directly (during mid-summer) to Aramark Food Services.
