Governor's School to hold 2009 Commencement

May 18, 2009

For Immediate Release

May 15, 2009

GREENVILLE, SC - The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities will hold its 2009 Spring Commencement, 11 am, Saturday, May 23 at the Peace Center for Performing Arts.

There are 96 candidates for graduation. Seniors assemble at 10 am for the traditional procession through campus. They receive Governor's School Medallions as they exit the front gates.

Additionally, the Governor's School will hold its Celebration of Achievement Ceremony for senior students 6 pm, Friday, May 22 at the Peace Center.

The Class of 2009 senior gift will benefit the Ann Y. "Tunky" Riley Memorial Scholarship Fund, an endowed fund held at the Governor's School for the Arts Foundation. The GSA Foundation will match all contributions, dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000.

The scholarship fund honors Tunky Riley, who was the wife of The Honorable Richard Riley, former Governor and National Secretary of Education. Mrs. Riley was an instrumental and passionate advocate for the Governor's School for nearly 30 years.

Each year, a portion of the scholarship fund will help students in financial need pay required meal plan fees.

"The 2009 senior class gift is a wonderful testament to the benefits Governor's School students receive," said Dr. Bruce Halverson, Governor's School President. "The class of 2009 realizes that the Governor's School offers life-changing opportunities, and their desire to make attendance possible for future students is admirable."
