Governor's School Dancers to perform
Dance students of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities will perform on the stage of the Gunter Theatre, Peace Center for the Performing Arts, downtown Greenville on Saturday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m and Sunday, November 14, at 2:00 p.m.
Thirty-five (35) dance students from 16 South Carolina counties will perform. The program includes Tchaikovsky’s Serenade as choreographed by George Balanchine; Grand Pas from Raymonda by Alexander Gazunov and Marius Petipa. Surdna Guest Artist Marina Levasheva, and faculty Lloyd Whitmore, Sandra Neels, and Department Chair Stanislav Issaev have also created performance pieces.
Dance faculty Master Teachers and advisors include Robert Barnett, Sandra Neels, Lloyd Whitmore, and Irina Ushakova. The department is led by Stanislav Issaev, winner of both the coveted Vaslav Nijinsky prize and People’s Artist of Russia. In addition, with the support of the Surdna Foundation, several guest artists teach master classes each year.
Governor’s School Residential High School Dance students participate in a rigorous classically-based, Vaganova ballet technique program. This style encourages students to develop self-discipline, physical agility, and grace. Modern, Jazz, and Character Dance are also included in the Dance curriculum.
The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities provides outstanding pre-professional training, arts and academic education to the state’s emerging artists in a year-round residential setting. The five-week Summer Dance program is open to students ages 12-17. There are also two-week summer programs for rising 9th and 10th graders with talent in Creative Writing, Drama, Vocal or Instrumental Music, and the Visual Arts. Students from across the state join the residential high school to complete 11th and 12th grades and go on to pursue careers and higher education in both the arts and other areas.
