Governor's School to celebrate the national event with activities, discussion
GREENVILLE, SC - The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities will hold local events in celebration of the national Banned Books Week, September 26 - October 3, 2009.
Sponsored annually by the American Library Association, Banned Books Week promotes intellectual freedom to select literature that may be banned or considered unorthodox in various communities. These books range from classic novels to children's stories.
Some examples of books that have been banned or under the threat of banning include Huckleberry Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird and the Harry Potter series.
Governor's School activities will include a film and discussion about censorship and the annual "Read-Out" where students and faculty are invited to read publicly from their favorite banned book. The event will also include a student trivia contest and a display of student artwork created for Banned Books Week.
