Clarinetist James Campbell to visit Governor's School

Internationally renowned musician and professor to hold recital, masterclass

GREENVILLE, SC - Internationally renowned clarinetist James Campbell will be in residence at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Art and Humanities on Monday and Tuesday, November 23 and 24.

Campbell, a professor at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, has earned numerous accolades as a professional musician including five television specials, more than 40 recordings and 30 or more commissioned works.

His concerts have taken him to over 25 countries, appearing as soloist with more than 50 orchestras including the Montreal Symphony, the Russian Philharmonic, the London Symphony, and the Boston Pops. He has performed with Glenn Gould, Aaron Copland, more than 30 different string quartets, and jazz with pianist Gene DiNovi.

Campbell's residency at the Governor's School will include the following events:  

  • On Monday, November 23rd at 7:30 pm, Campbell will be in concert in Smith Recital Hall. The program includes a performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concert Concerto, K.622. Dr. Kyra Zhang, Governor's School clarinet instructor, will join him for a performance of the Mendelssohn Concert Piece for Two Clarinets in F-Minor.
  • On Tuesday, November 24th at 1:30 pm, Campbell will lead a solo and chamber music masterclass for woodwind students in Smith Recital Hall.

Both events are free and open to the public.   

Zhang, a former student of Campbell, said she is thrilled that he will be on campus and will work with clarinetists and other woodwind students.

"James Campbell is an exceptional musician," Zhang said. "His playing has deeply influenced my ideas about musical expression. I can't wait for him to share his talent and artistry with our students."

Campbell has given masterclasses on five continents including the Royal Academy in London, the Tokyo College of Music, the Moscow Conservatory, the Rotterdam Conservatory, the University of Southern California, the Beijing Conservatory, and throughout Australia and Canada.

He has more than 40 recordings encompassing most of the standard clarinet repertoire. His recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet was chosen by BBC Radio and the London Times as the best available.
