Concert grand piano and fortepiano acquired by Governor's School
GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA - SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 - The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities Music Department acquired a Steinway Model D concert grand piano and a McCobb fortepiano over the summer.
The nine-foot Steinway dates from 1963. Rebuilt at the Steinway factory in 2006, Case Brothers of Spartanburg used the grand as a rental instrument for such venues as the Spoleto Festival, the Brevard Music Center, and numerous regional colleges and orchestras. "This piano marks an important milestone in Governor's School history as we now have a proper concert instrument for use by Governor's School pianists and a collaborative instrument for the entire department for generations to come," comments Dr. Stephen Taylor, the school's piano faculty. The purchase of this piano was made possible by the Governor's School for the Arts Foundation.
The acquisition of the McCobb fortepiano was made possible by the generous donation of Dr. George Lucktenberg, noted early keyboard scholar and performer. "This replica of a Mozart-era piano is a significant addition to the Governor's School's collection of keyboard instruments, which includes a Kingston Harpsichord and eight modern grand pianos," notes Dr. Taylor.
The Lucktenbergs are an important family in the life of the Governor's School. In addition to Dr. Lucktenberg's long-time relationship with the school, Jerrie Lucktenberg served for many years as a violin instructor in the Honors Program, and granddaughter Hope is a 2010 graduate of the Residential High School program. The family recently established an endowment through the Foundation.
Free piano concerts have been planned throughout the school year including such performers as Joan Yarbrough, Keiko Sekino, Charles Fugo, Ruby Morgan, and Stephen Taylor. Please check the performance calendar on the Governor's School website at www.scgsah.org.
