D.B. Bonds of "Legally Blonde" visits school
Actor on national tour credits Governor's School with theatre aspirations
GREENVILLE, SC - D.B. Bonds sat on the edge of the stage in Smith Recital Hall Thursday, preparing to share his insights on the world of musical theatre with music and drama students.
But first, the lead actor in the Broadway tour of "Legally Blonde: The Musical", commented on the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities' campus and the high school program for students statewide. When Bonds attended the Governor's School drama program in the summer of 1991, the nine-month residential program did not exist.
"Unbelievable," Bonds told students, after a brief campus tour. "To think that I could have had an opportunity like this is incredible. I hope you all appreciate what you have here."
Bonds, a 33 year-old Columbia native, portrays "Emmett" in "Legally Blonde: The Musical", the role played by Luke Wilson in the 2001 movie with Reese Witherspoon. The screen version was made into a Broadway musical in 2007, and last year the tour began traveling the United States. The tour stopped at The Peace Center March 24-29.
In a recent interview with the Greenville Journal, Bonds credits his seventh grade teacher and the summer drama program with his decision to pursue musical theatre.
"I consider Greenville the place where it all started," Bonds is quoted as saying. "That summer was what kick-started me wanting to do this for a living."
"Legally Blonde: The Musical" continues its tour in Naples, Florida. For more information visit the website: http://tour.legallyblondethemusical.com/.
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school for emerging artists statewide. Pre-professional programs are offered in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.
