Dance Program wins 2010 Outstanding School Award at Youth America Grand Prix

Governor's School Dancers also receive awards at YAGP competition

GREENVILLE, SC - The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities has the best Dance program in its region, as decided by the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) during the dance organization's regional Semi-Finals competition.

The Governor's School received the 2010 Outstanding School Award at the YAGP Columbia, SC Semi-Finals on January 15-17. The regional competition included dancers and dance programs from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Only nine other programs nationwide will be recognized with an Outstanding School Award for their region.

Five Governor's School dancers also received awards: Michael Agudelo of Spartanburg; Gregory Taylor of Forsythe, Georgia; Anson Zwingelberg of Horry County; Nina Rivers of Charleston County; and, Katherine Heaton of Oconee County.  The results are as follows:

  • Michael Agudelo (senior) - 2nd Place, Classical Dance Category, Senior Age Division
  • Gregory Taylor (junior) - 2nd Place, Contemporary Dance Category, Senior Age Division
  • Anson Zwingelberg (freshman) - 3rd Place, Classical Dance Category, Junior Age Division

Nina Rivers (sophomore) and Katherine Heaton (freshman) were named in the best 12 of the senior and junior competitions, respectively. Agudelo, Taylor and Zwingelberg are invited to participate in the YAGP International Student Ballet and Contemporary Dance Scholarship Competition on March 21-25, 2010 in New York.

"Once again, our faculty and students have demonstrated that the Governor's School's dance program is exceptional," said Dr. Bruce Halverson, Governor's School President. "We are extraordinarily proud of the continuing record of success of our students."

Youth America Grand Prix is the world's largest student ballet competition, awarding more than $250,000 annually in scholarships to leading dance schools worldwide. The competition is held annually around the world with international regional competitions held in Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Italy. Dance students of all nationalities compete from ages 9-19.
