Written in 1982 by South African playwright Athol Fugard, this part auto-biographical play is a chronicle of Fugard's youth in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, during the height of the anti-apartheid movement. The play centers on three characters and their complex relationship that is redefined in a single afternoon. During a rainy day in his family's St. George's Park Tea Room, 17-year-old Hally spends the afternoon with the tea room's employees, Sam and Willie. The three are a "family" in a sense, as Sam and Willie helped raise Hally due to his absent alcoholic father.  Upon hearing of his tyrannical father's return home, Hally's anger pushes him to reevaluate his natural bond with these two men and society's expectation of racial divide. During the play, Sam and Willie's description of a ballroom dance competition, described as a "world without collisions," works as a metaphor for equality; an idea that is sadly slipping out of their grasp.
