GREENVILLE, SC - The Dance Department of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities will present its Fall Dance Performance on Saturday, November 14 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, November 15 at 2 pm.
The performance will feature Governor's School alumnae Whitney Huell, '04, of Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Both performances will be held in the Peace Center's Gunter Theatre. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the Peace Center's Box Office, 300 South Main Street in downtown Greenville, or by calling 864.467.3000.
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school for emerging artists statewide. Programs of pre-professional training are offered in Creative Writing, Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Dance. Most students complete their last two years of high school at the Governor's School; dance students may attend up to four years.
The classically-based Dance Program applies a strict interpretation of the Vaganova ballet technique. Through rigorous teacher planning and complex exercise training, students learn to bring a conscious approach to every movement. Students are also trained in modern dance, and develop self-discipline, physical agility and grace.
Dance students perform at least three times a year to build confidence, elevate performance skills and refine stage manners.
Huell, formerly of Dutch Fork Middle School in Irmo, attended the Governor's School for four years. She began her training at Dee Crump School of Dance in Columbia, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Ballet and an Outside field in Psychology from Indiana University in 2007.
The Dance Department includes six teachers, led by Stanislav Issaev. Issaev studied at the Perm Academy and upon graduation, joined the Moscow State Ballet Theatre, where he was a principal dancer.
In 1980 Issaev was awarded the Gold Medal in the National Soviet Ballet Competition in Moscow, and later that year won the Gold Medal and an award for extraordinary technical skills at the International Ballet Competition in Varna. Three years later he was presented with the title of Distinguished Artist of Russia.
In 1984 Issaev was awarded the Vaslav Nijinsky Prize from the Paris Academy of Dance, which acclaimed him as "the year's most distinguished male dancer in the world," an award previously given to Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Vladimir Vassiliev, and Mikhail Lavrovsky. In 1990 he was named People's Artist of Russia, the highest artistic honor in the country. He partnered legendary Ekaterina Maximova during his world tour with the Moscow State Ballet Theatre, including the company's first tour of the US.
Designated in 1996 by Mikhail Gorbachev to dance in the United States, Issaev was a leading dancer in special galas throughout America, Canada, and Spain. In 1990 he was invited to join the Atlanta Ballet as a principal dancer.
