Alumnus Will Burnip's artwork begins 2009-10 year for Lipscomb Gallery
For Immediate Release
August 19, 2009
GREENVILLE - Will Burnip, a 2003 graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, is returning to his alma mater to showcase his globally-inspired works in printmaking.
Burnip is installing about 20 pieces influenced by his study abroad in Tasmania and his education in printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute and the Visual Arts program of the Governor's School.
His work will be displayed August 24 through September 16 in the Lipscomb Family Gallery, 10 am to 4 pm each weekday. The gallery is free and open to the public. However, visitors should sign in at the Administration building upon entering the Governor's School campus.
"We are delighted to have Will's exhibition in the Lipscomb Family Gallery," said Joe Thompson, Visual Arts Department Chair. "His work is excellent and he is one of our most talented students."
Burnip joined the Governor's School as a high school junior in 2001 from Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield. He studied with other emerging artists from throughout the state, under the direction of practicing artists and an academic faculty who specialize in their field.
His two years in Visual Arts gave him exposure to studio practices in architecture, drawing, graphic design, metals, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. As a senior, he selected printmaking as his concentration and built a portfolio.
"It really opened doors and exposed me to a whole lot more," Burnip said of attending the Governor's School.
The 2009-10 exhibitions at the Lipscomb Family Gallery will also include:
- September 25 - October 28 - Ceramics, student work from the University of South Carolina
- November 16 - December 14 - Clemson University Visual Arts Faculty Show
- January 7 - February 10 - Ceramics, Virginia Scotchie
- February 15-22 - SC Art Educators Association Show
- March 22 - April 22 - John Benvenuto Installation
- May 10-21 - Governor's School Student Show
