Godfrey to Attend Summer History Course
GREENVILLE, SC -- Social Studies teacher Rusty Godfrey will attend "Becoming Modern: America, 1918-1929", a summer institute for high school teachers of history, literature and art. The institute will be held June 21- July 3 at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
The course will explore a variety of questions throughout history, literature and art, such as: How did World War I affect politics in the United States; How did women and African Americans struggle to advance social equality; and, What explains the remarkable cultural ferment of this period?
Participants will assist National Humanities Center staff in identifying texts and defining lines of inquiry for a new addition to the Center's Toolbox Library, which provides online resources for teacher professional development and classroom instruction.
"I believe that the course will facilitate my understanding of the connections between history, art, and literature during the Roaring Twenties decade that will improve the American Studies course for next year," Godfrey said.
Godfrey joined the faculty of the Governor's School in 2002, and completed the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification process in the fall of 2004. In 2005, Godfrey attended the summer seminar of the Jewish Foundation of the Righteous held at Columbia University where he furthered his knowledge of the Holocaust.
Godfrey is chair of the Social Studies and World Languages department, and sponsors the International Relations Club. He currently teaches American Studies, Advanced Placement U.S. History, and a Holocaust Seminar.
