Playwright John Patrick Shanley to speak at kick-off event on Sept. 17

GREENVILLE, SC - The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) will begin a celebration of its tenth anniversary on September 17, at 11:00 a.m., with a showcase of student performances.

Pulitzer-prize winning playwright and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley will be the guest speaker for the event, to be held in the Sakas Theatre on the school campus.

Shanley first visited the School in 2006 as a Guest Artist in Residence, conducting master classes for students in the creative writing and drama departments.

Celebrating ten years of inspired excellence, the anniversary commemoration will extend throughout the current academic year and includes 5:10 Thursdays - a series of performances and lectures on the campus in January 2010 -an event in Columbia and the annual Leadership Tribute, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth and success of the School.

The Governor's School, a state public high school, was established with funding allocated by the State of South Carolina that was matched and exceeded by contributions from a private fundraising campaign. South Carolina is the only state in the nation to offer its artistically talented high school students the opportunity to attend a residential arts program with pre-professional training in creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual arts.

The campus opened in Fall 1999 and graduated its first class in 2001. Students enter as juniors and complete a full high school academic curriculum in addition to intensive studies in their selected arts discipline.

The School has now graduated 890 students, representing counties from across the state. These students have been offered a total of $97.4 million in arts and academic scholarship offers to the finest colleges, universities and conservatories in South Carolina and throughout the nation.
