Governor's School students win Scholastic Art awards
Visual Arts students at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities won sixteen awards from the 2011 Scholastic Art Competition, including nine Certificates of Merit, three Silver Keys, and four Gold Keys. Works designated as Gold Keys will go on to the national level in February 2011. Award-winning students are listed below with their hometown, home school, and level of award.
Joseph Thompson, Chair of Visual Arts at the Governor's School, stated, "I'm extraordinarily proud of these students' accomplishments in the Scholastics Copetition. Their success reflects the excellent training that is occurring in all areas of the state, as well as the work that we are doing here at the Governor's School. It is an honor to cultivate the abilities of these talented students."
United States and Canadian students in grades 7 through 12 may submit their works to regional programs of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and its Regional Affiliates. Students can submit entries in 30 categories, including Drawing, Painting, Photography, Film & Animation, Video Games, Poetry, Personal Essay, Short Story, and Humor to earn opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships. Works are reviewed by professionals in the visual and literary arts for 1) Originality, 2) Technical Skill, and 3) Emergence of a Personal Vision or Voice.
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school located in Greenville, South Carolina, providing a unique arts and academic education to the state's emerging artists. Young artists, usually in 11th or 12th grade, study creative writing, dance, drama, music, or visual arts during the academic year and rising 9th and 10th grade students attend summer programs in these areas, with summer dance programs open to rising 7th through 12th grade students.
