Governor's School to host German pianist Andreas Boyde

February 26, 2009

World-renowned German pianist Andreas Boyde will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at the SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. The concert is open to the public and will be held in Smith Recital Hall.

Other events on campus will feature Boyde. He will give a lecture and demonstration on Schumann's Carnaval at 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday, February 25th. Boyde will also lead a master class with Governor's School piano students on Friday, February 27th at 4:30 p.m.  These events are also in Smith Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.

A highly sought-after performer, Boyde's wide-ranging repertoire encompasses all major areas of the piano literature. He is a soloist with renowned orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Radio Orchestra, the Zürcher Kammerorchester, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Hallé Orchestra Manchester, the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the Berliner Sinfonieorchester.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our students, our school and the greater Greenville community to hear a live performance from such a celebrated pianist," said Dr. Bruce Halverson, Governor's School President. "We greatly anticipate Mr. Boyde's concert and hope any interested person will feel free to join us for this fantastic event."

Boyde has recorded numbers of CDs and made many recordings for both radio and television. He recently completed a recording of the complete piano works of Johannes Brahms, and in the vein of contemporary music, gave the European premiere of Paul Schoenfield's Piano Concerto Four Parables and the first performance of John Pickard's Piano Concerto, which is dedicated to him.

Boyde was born in Oschatz Germany. He studied with Christa Holzweißig and Amadeus Webersinke in Dresden, and subsequently with James Gibb in London. His mentor and promoter, American pianist Malcolm Frager, also proved a major influence. Boyde currently lives in London.
