GREENVILLE, SC - Joe Thompson, Visual Arts instructor and department chair, will showcase his artwork at the University of South Carolina-Upstate in Spartanburg, November 6th - December 4th.
Thompson's show, Of Reliquaries and Watertowers, will exhibit in the Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery, located at the Performing Arts Center. Thompson will give a lecture about his works on November 12 at 4:30 pm, followed by a reception. Gallery events are free and open to the public.
The show will feature 16 pieces that highlight Thompson's artistic interests over the last decade, including large scale vessel forms, assemblages, bronze pieces, drawings and prints. Each piece is part of a larger group of works and represents a sampling of his interests in form and idea.
Thompson leads the nine-person Visual Arts faculty of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. The Governor's School is a public residential high school in Greenville for emerging artists statewide. The school offers a rigorous academic education and pre-professional arts training in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Summer programs in the arts are also offered.
Visual Arts at the Governor's School develops students' conceptual and creative skills, instilling the discipline and confidence necessary to investigate their own self-expression. Studio work includes drawing, painting, ceramics, graphic design, metals, photography, printmaking, two- and three-dimensional design and sculpture.
Thompson, who is originally from Athens, Georgia, served on the Art Department faculty at the University of Georgia before coming to the Governor's School. He received an M.F.A. Degree from Clemson University, and has exhibited his work at the South Carolina State Museum, the W.J. Thompson Gallery of the University of Georgia, Coker College, Anderson College, Lander University, and the Greenville County Art Museum.
