SC Governor's School hosts guest conductor, David Becker, for Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra concert
SOUTH CAROLINA - May 2, 2011 - On May 12, 2011, the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) presents its annual spring concert, along with nationally known guest conductor, David Becker.
The concert, held in Gunter Theater of the Peace Center in downtown Greenville, SC, will be in two parts, the Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble.
The Wind Ensemble, conducted by David Hamilton, will play Schuman's Chester Overture; Tower Music by the American composer, Alan Hovhaness, honoring the centenary (100th anniversary) of his birth; and will end with a lovely English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra, conducted by guest David Becker, will perform well-known classics such as Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op 67 and Hovhaness's And God Created Great Whales, which incorporates recorded sounds from whales. Finishing the program will be orchestra selections from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.
Guest Conductor, David Becker:
Director of Orchestral Studies and Conductor of the Symphony and Opera Orchestras at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music (WI), Professor Becker was the recipient of the Lawrence University 2010 "Excellence in Teaching Award." He was Director of Orchestras and Professor of the Graduate Orchestral Conducting Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1984 until joining Lawrence University in 2005.
Highlights of his career include Maestro Becker and the UW Symphony Orchestra receiving critical acclaim for their international tours to Central Europe (1998) and Spain (2001). He was also the Associate Conductor of the Madison Symphony (1985-1992) and Music Director/Conductor of the Racine Symphony (WI) (1989-1993).
In addition to his active conducting and performing schedule, Dr. Becker is widely recognized for his dedication to teaching young musicians which has resulted in guest conducting, orchestral clinics, and All-State Honor Orchestras in 40 states. Mr. Becker has been invited to conduct the MENC All-National Honors Orchestra in Washington DC in June 2012.

The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school located in Greenville, South Carolina, providing a unique arts and academic education to the state's emerging artists.
