SC Governor's School music student receives ASTA Instrument Award
GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA - March 30, 2011- South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SC Governor's School) student Gary Washington receives a new cello from the Potter's Violin Outreach Program, sponsored by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). Washington was one of three students awarded an instrument, nationwide, based on musicianship and financial need.
In response to learning he was a winner, Washington was shocked and excited. He is thankful to the SC Governor's School for offering him this opportunity.
"Having this cello offers me the independence to continue playing," says Washington.
This bi-annual competition recognizes students who have financial need and simply cannot buy an instrument. Washington was highly recommended for this honor by his teachers, including Music Instructor Katie Dey, based on his outstanding ability and his joy in sharing music. Washington shows the fortitude and talent to make music his life-long passion. He has been accepted to Loyola University in New Orleans, LA where he hopes to continue his musical studies.
"I have seldom seen a musician whose love for music is so clearly evident," says Dr. Bruce R. Halverson, SC Governor's School President. "With a smile and a passion, with all the odds against him, he has pushed ahead to gain acceptance to an outstanding school and live a life of kindness and respect."
Washington is a residential student from St. Stephen in Berkeley County, SC and previously attended Timberland High School.
