SC Governor's School music students receive scholarships from the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Le
SOUTH CAROLINA - April 26, 2011 - South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) music students receive scholarships from the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League (CSOL).
Pianist Lonnie Russell is the inaugural recipient of the David and Karen Stahl Memorial College Scholarship, a $2,500 award that was established in honor of the late Charleston Symphony Orchestra conductor and his wife. Flutist Chelsea Morris won a college scholarship in the amount of $2,000. Both students will perform in a celebration recital at the McBee House on the campus of Ashley Hall.
"For the last two years, the CSOL has helped me attend summer programs which would otherwise be unaffordable. This fall, in a significant way they will help me attend my first year of college," says Lonnie, a Summerville, SC native. "Needless to say, I'm very grateful to organizations that continue to help young people cover the expensive costs involved with music study." Lonnie is from Dorchester County and previously attended Rollings Middle School for the Arts.
"It was a true honor being chosen for one of the CSOL College Scholarships. Competing against so many talented young musicians in the Charleston area for a panel of judges was a humbling, yet enjoyable experience," says Chelsea, a Charleston, SC native. "I hope to use the $2,000 scholarship to major in Flute Performance at Appalachian State University this fall." Chelsea is from Charleston County and previously attended the Charleston County School for the Arts.
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League, Inc. (CSOL®) is a multi-talented group of dedicated volunteers whose purpose is to support the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. They have done this for more than 40 years through music education programs, audience development, and a number of fundraising projects. The CSOL® actively supports music education and funding for the arts by annually awarding scholarships, grants and awards.
