May 5, 2011

SOUTH CAROLINA - May 5, 2011 - South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) students Victoria Ford and Jessica Miller were selected as US Presidential Scholars in the Arts. There are only 20 Scholars in the Arts recognized nationally.

Five South Carolina students were named US Presidential Scholars, but Victoria and Jessica were the only students recognized as US Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

SCGSAH was the only school in the nation to have two US Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

"Victoria certainly deserves this honor. She is one of the most disciplined writers we have," says Scott Gould, Chair of the Creative Writing Department. "She works very hard at her craft, and it's nice to see Victoria get credit for her efforts."  Victoria is a Greenville native and formerly attended Greenville High School.

"Jessica is exceptionally talented, and she is an incredibly hard worker," says her drama instructor Dan Day. "Her accomplishment is a reflection of her maturity and self-discipline, as well as her singular commitment to the professional training that is unique to the SC Governor's School Drama Department. This award is an honor for Jessica, for everyone in the Drama Department, and for the entire school." Jessica is a Rock Hill, SC native and formerly participated in the K12 International online program.

The pool of candidates for the Presidential Scholars program began with approximately 3,000 high school seniors with high SAT or ACT scores from the United States and Puerto Rico. The list was narrowed to around 500 honorees prior to the announcement of 141 US Presidential Scholars. The Scholars are invited to an awards program in Washington, DC, summer 2011.

Since its establishment in 1964, the program has honored more than 5,000 of the nation's top-performing students. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
