April 7, 2011

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA - April 6, 2011 - South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SC Governor's School) and The Children's Museum of the Upstate (TCM) will offer Ignite!, a summer arts program, for rising 7th and 8th graders from Greenville County.

This program is created to introduce students to the arts.  Providing an opportunity to explore creative writing, dance, drama, music and visual arts during the one-week programs led by certified art educators.  Students do not need to have arts experience.

"We hope to inspire the emerging artist in each student attending the Ignite! program by introducing them to the arts. The tools taught in this environment help students to create beauty, to discover creative solutions and to work collaboratively with their peers," says E. Cheryl Ponder, Director of Enrollment & Outreach at the Governor's School.  "We are very pleased to create a partnership with Nancy Halverson at the Children's Museum of the Upstate to provide a summer arts outreach program in Greenville."

Using Greenville as their canvas, Ignite students will be taught at the Governor's School and the Children's Museum, and will visit surrounding cultural and artist sites in downtown Greenville.

Ignite sessions will run from 9 am - 4 pm Monday - Friday.  Applications are now available at: http://www.scgsah.org/ and www.tcmupstate.org.  Sessions will be held:  June 27 - July 1; July 11 - 15 and August 1 - 5.  Program cost is $250.00.  There is financial assistance available for families with demonstrated financial need, and for those attending Title I schools.
