Senior class gift to benefit Ann "Tunky" Riley Fund
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GREENVILLE, SC - Graduating seniors at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities will make the largest class gift in school history to the Ann Y. "Tunky" Riley Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship fund honors Tunky Riley, the late wife of The Honorable Richard Riley, former Governor and National Secretary of Education. Mrs. Riley was an instrumental and passionate advocate for the Governor's School for nearly 30 years.
Richard Riley will be photographed with the senior class, 5:30 pm, Friday, May 22 at the Peace Center for Performing Arts Concert Hall. At 6 pm, Richard Riley is expected to receive a poem written by Creative Writing student Samantha Bryan during the school's annual Celebration of Achievement, also at the Peace Center. The poem is an artistic expression of the student experience.
"The 2009 senior class gift is a wonderful testament to the benefits Governor's School students receive," said Dr. Bruce Halverson, Governor's School President. "The class of 2009 realizes that the Governor's School offers life-changing opportunities, and their desire to make attendance possible for future students is admirable."
The endowed scholarship fund is held at the Governor's School for the Arts Foundation. Each year, a portion of the scholarship fund will help students in financial need pay required meal plan fees. The Foundation is matching all contributions, dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000.
On Saturday, May 23 at 11 am, the Governor's School will hold its 2009 Spring Commencement at the Peace Center. There are 96 candidates for graduation. Seniors assemble at 10 am for the traditional procession through campus, and receive Governor's School Medallions as they exit the front gates.
