South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities ranked in Newsweek's Top 500 High Schools
SOUTH CAROLINA - June 29, 2011 - Newsweek announced the Top 500 High Schools in the nation and the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities (SCGSAH) was ranked 105th.
Newsweek compiled the 2011 list after reaching out to administrators, principals, guidance counselors, and Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate coordinators at more than 10,000 public high schools nationwide. In order to be considered for the list, each school had to complete a survey requesting specific data from the 2009-2010 academic year. In total, more than 1,100 schools were assessed to produce the final list of the top 500 high schools.
Derived from a panel of experts, the rankings are to reflect a school's success in developing college-ready and life-ready students.
Newsweek's panel based its ranking on six components: graduation rate (25%), college matriculation rate (25%), AP tests taken per graduate (25%), average SAT/ACT scores (10%), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10%), and AP courses offered (5%).
"This exceptional recognition demonstrates that South Carolina's young artists can compete nationally at the highest level in both their academics and artistic endeavors," says Dr. Bruce Halverson, President of SCGSAH.
Three additional schools for South Carolina were ranked: SC School for Science & Math in Hartsville, Academic Magnet in North Charleston and Dutch Fork in Irmo.
