State's emerging artists begin new year at Governor's School

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA - AUGUST 18, 2010 - Young artists from every corner of the state flocked to the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities as doors opened for the 2010-2011 session of the Residential High School. The junior class and sophomore dance students, attending the school for the first time, arrived on Saturday, August 14, while returning seniors registered Sunday, August 15.
Governor's School students, selected by audition to attend in one of five art areas - Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, or Visual Arts, receive indepth arts training in addition to an exceptional academic education, completing their last two years of high school (dancers may be admitted a year earlier and attend for three years).
"An unequaled sense of excitement fills our campus when the students arrive," says Governor's School President Bruce Halverson. "These young artists share tremendous talent, passion, and enthusiasm and together they create an environment where they are eager to do their best. It will be a great year!"
The 202 students attending the Residential High School for the 2010-2011 term hail from 28 South Carolina counties. Attached is a list of these students by county.
About the Governor's School
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school for emerging artists. The school gives artistically talented high school students from across the state the opportunity of studying their art in a supportive environment of artistic and academic excellence. Arts concentrations include Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts.
The 8.5-acre campus overlooks Reedy River Falls Park in the cultural hub of downtown Greenville. Designed to emulate a Tuscan village, the community includes a residence hall, state-of-the-art performance hall, black box theatre, contemporary library, classrooms, studios, laboratories, practice rooms, fitness center, and an art gallery, all surrounded by gardens, sculpture, and open courtyards.
The nine-month Residential High School is modeled after a master-apprentice community with an arts faculty who are all practicing artists as well as educators in their areas of expertise. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma.
Dancers can attend the Residential High School from tenth through twelfth grades. All other art areas arre two-year programs for eleventh and twelfth grade students.
Students apply and audition to attend the school. There is no tuition, although there are minimal processing and meal plan fees. Life at the Governor's School is a constant collaboration. Emerging artists from different backgrounds and all five art areas work together, learn from one another, and grow to form bonds that last long past graduation.
Summer Programs at the Governor's School. Summer students experience the challenges and rewards of intensive arts training. The summer faculty is made up of practicing artists who are dedicated to nurturing creative potential. Summer students have the opportunity to showcase their work in end-of-session recitals, readings, and presentations. While learning discipline and craft from instructors who are practicing artists, they also form bonds with emerging artists from all five art areas in a supportive and engaging environment.
Summer programs include the Discovery Program, the Academy Program, and the Summer Dance Program.
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities provides high-caliber pre-professional training and arts education through a year-round series of programs for students and educators. The Residential High School offers an intensive curriculum in the literary, visual, and performing arts combined with rigorous academic and humanities studies for high school juniors and seniors. In addition to the Residential High School, the school offers the two-week Discovery Program for rising ninth graders; the two-week Academy Program for rising high school sophomores; the five-week Summer Dance Institute for dancers ages 13-19; and professional development opportunities for arts educators.
