Student named Presidential Scholars Candidate

March 3, 2009

Creative Writing senior Neha Parthasarathy among 60 young artists nationwide
GREENVILLE, SC - Neha Parthasarathy, a senior Creative Writing student from Simpsonville, is one of 60 students nationwide selected as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts candidate, the U.S. Department of Education announced.

Parthasarathy is in the running to become a 2009 Presidential Scholar, a group of 141 students who will be selected in May. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 45th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.

Scholar in the Arts candidates were nominated from more than 6,500 participants in the annual youngARTS competition conducted by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

"Neha's selection as one of 60 Presidential Scholar in the Arts candidates nationwide speaks volumes about her achievements both artistically and academically," Governor's School President Dr. Bruce Halverson said. "We applaud her as she seeks to join the nation's distinguished group of Presidential Scholars."

About 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts candidates will combine with 121 Presidential Scholars, the program's academic component, for the 2009 program. All students are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

Scholar in the Arts candidates are also identified for their exceptional performance in the disciplines of dance, film/video, instrumental music, jazz, voice, photography, theater, visual arts and creative writing. Further consideration will be based on students' essays, self assessments, school recommendations and school transcripts.

"Neha's recognition is a result of her passion for writing and commitment to her craft," said Scott Gould, who heads the Creative Writing Department at the Governor's School. "Since her arrival here at Governor's School, she's improved steadily, and this nomination is certainly proof of her talent."

In June, Presidential Scholars will receive a medallion at a recognition ceremony in the nation's capitol and participate in events with their elected representatives. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of about 30 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists. The Scholars will be announced by the U.S. Department of Education.
