Whitney Huell one of Dance Magazine's 25 to Watch
Whitney Huell, a 2004 graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) has been selected as one of "25 to Watch" in the January 2011 issue of Dance Magazine.
For the 10th Anniversary 25 to Watch list, prior recipients were asked to nominate candidates for the award. Choreographer, Helen Pickett, selected in 2007, describes Whitney as a risk taker who has a brightness in her eyes. Pickett continues she has a beautifully honed technique... and has sky-high extensions... all of that works in tandem with her magnetic stage presence. She lights up onstage.
Whitney studied dance at the Dee Crump School of Dance in Columbia, SC, where she attended Dutch Fork Middle School.
As a Governor's School student, Whitney demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and was dedicated to dance as an art form, says Stanislav Issaev, the school's Dance Chair. He is unsurprised at her success stating, she is equally comfortable in both classical and contemporary works, making her highly desirable to major ballet companies.
Last May, Ms. Huell joined current Governor's School Dance students as a guest performer in the year-end recital held at the Peace Center's Gunter Theatre. Student comments about her included she really told us about life as a dancer, her stage presence is amazing, and she explained a lot about the advantages of having studied here (Governor's School).
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school located in Greenville, SC, providing a unique arts and academic education to the state's emerging artists. Young artists usually in 11th or 12th grade study creative writing, dance, drama, music, or visual arts during the academic year and rising 9th and 10th grade students attend summer programs in these areas, with summer dance programs open to rising 7th through 12 grade students.
