Writing senior selected for Princeton symposium
For Immediate Release
Uchechi Kalu of Orangeburg among 80 students chosen nationwide
GREENVILLE, SC - Creative Writing senior Uchechi Kalu is invited by Princeton University to attend its prestigious Arts and Humanities Symposium, October 2-4 on the University's campus in New Jersey.
Kalu, formerly of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, is one of only 80 students in the United States selected to participate. The annual Symposium offers the nation's best students a glimpse of what it means to explore the arts or humanities in a college setting. This year's theme is "Victorian London."
Creative Writing Department Chair Scott Gould recommended Kalu to the Symposium's selection committee.
"In her year-plus at the Governor's School, Uchechi has proven to be one of our most engaged, curious writers, and her interest in learning her craft and learning about literature is admirable," Gould said. "I have no doubt that Uchechi would benefit from a weekend of study at Princeton. And I have no doubt that the symposium would benefit from having her in attendance."
Guidance Counselor Lela McKnight said she nominated Kalu for the Symposium because Kalu is a well-rounded student with varied experience in the academic and artistic arenas.
"Uchechi exhibits a unique potential for making a difference in the world," McKnight said.
Kalu is excited about the opportunity to attend.
"There is no doubt this experience will broaden my mind as I explore different perspectives on art and society," Kalu said. "But more importantly, because of the foundation our school lays in blending art with humanities, this symposium will be an extension of what I'm taught everyday at the Governor's School."
Kalu hopes the Symposium will offer insight into Princeton University, where she would like to complete undergraduate studies in Psychology and Creative Writing.
"I'm really interested in schools that encourage the arts and humanities, making them something more that just extracurricular," she said. "This Symposium will give me an experience I'll never forget."
