Neha Parthasarathy claims second place in college's annual competition
GREENVILLE, SC - Creative Writing senior Neha Parthasarathy won second place for her poetry submissions in the 2008-09 Bennington College Young Writers Competition.
Parthasarathy, who is from Simpsonville, submitted three poems. The award comes with a $250 prize.
"Congratulations to Neha and her poetry instructor, Mamie Morgan," said Scott Gould, Creative Writing department chair.
Each year, Bennington invites students in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades to submit original writing for the competition. First-place winners in each category are awarded $500.
Typically, more than 2,000 students submit poetry, fiction, and nonfiction entries, which are judged by current Bennington students and literature faculty members.
This is not the first time the Creative Writing department has been recognized in the Young Writers Competition. In 2007, Temnete Sebhatu won first place for Fiction writing, while Jessica Chao claimed first place for non-fiction writing.
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school for emerging artists statewide. Arts concentrations include Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.
