Notable Alumni From The Creative Writing Department

Sammi Bryan, a 2009 graduate of SCGSAH is also a graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis.   She is currently working on her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Alabama. While completing her MFA studies, she is teaching at the university and working as an associate editor for the Black Warrior Review, the highly respected literary journal. 



Malia Griggs graduated from SCGSAH in 2007.  After a stint at Cosmopolitan magazine, Malia worked for Comedy Central as a digital production assistant and production coordinator, primarily on The Colbert Show. Currently she is social media editor at The Daily Beast, an online news publication.


Uchechi Kalu, from Orangeburg is a 2010 graduate.  Uchechi attended Princeton University during which time she traveled and studied in Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, Israel and Palestine.  Since graduation, she has used her intellect and training as an artist to be a social activist for underserved populations in China and throughout the world.  Currently, Uchechi lives in Beijing and is a member of an arts collective called TransMigrant Flow which works to create workshops and creative events for foreigners in her area.

Yahoo Beauty named Dana Oliver, 2013 SCGSAH graduate, its beauty director, beginning June 2016.  She joins the All Things Beauty division of Yahoo from The Huffington Post where she was the executive fashion and beauty editor covering breaking news and pop culture trends. Previously, she worked at AOL's StyleList as an assistant editor and then editor.  In her new role, Dana will oversee beauty features and market coverage, as well as original video content.



2012 alumna, Anna Pittman, is a graduate of NYU's Tisch’s Dramatic Writing Program, where she had several one-act plays produced in Tisch’s Goldberg Theater. She handles script coverage and project development as an intern for Jean Doumanian Productions in New York. She also works as a special effects makeup artist for independent feature films. Anna is originally from Bluffton, SC.
