David Rhyne

Choral Instructor

Dr. David Rhyne is in his second season at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. He is the director of the choral program and instructor of conducting.

David is also in his fifth season as Director of Music Ministries for Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, SC. Prior to coming to Greenville, David served Lutheran congregations in Stamford, Connecticut and Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Additionally David spent the 2003-2004 academic year as Visiting Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Tennessee Tech University.

A native of Gaston County, North Carolina, his education includes degrees in organ performance from Lenoir-Rhyne College and the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati. David hold the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami (FL).

In addition to his duties at Trinity Lutheran, David is founder and Musical Director for Greenville Early Music. This choral ensemble of professional and skilled amateur musicians specializes in choral works of the Renaissance and Baroque and frequently partners with various like-minded instrumentalists in the area.

David is currently the Dean of the Greenville chapter of the American Guild of Organists and active in the American Choral Directors Association.

At the Governor's School, David hopes to broaden the musical experience of the students through choral repertoire of all periods. Ensemble singing is wonderful training for the musical ear and, working together with other musician, instills a sense of community and cooperation toward a common goal. Ensembles offer a social complement to the solitary practice room discipline of all musicians.
