“It is in the late Fall at Governor's School that I feel the most excitement. It is the time of the first round of performances and exhibitions that reflect the extremely rapid growth taking place in this environment. It is the time where seniors show juniors what they have achieved so far and juniors just begin to really understand what is possible for them as well.
It is also in the Fall, with the first dance performance that I get a glimpse of the new 9th graders on stage as the dance seniors take on leadership rolls. It will be three years before I get to teach the younger students in humanities but their presence on campus as they mature each year articulates the cyclical nature of our school best for me.
About this time, the visual artists finish their first major paintings and sculptures and rise to the challenges of preparing a college portfolio. The writers produce the first issue of their publication, Slack and prepare to present their work at the first reading of the year. The drama department challenges us with a production that is both timely and timeless sparking discussions across campus about the mirror the arts unflinchingly present. All through this, the music department has been performing challenging work nearly each week leading up to the Wind Ensemble and Concertato performances, where we see the ensemble nature of their discipline.
Before they graduate, I will teach each student at our school. It is in the Fall of the year that I begin to learn who they are becoming as emerging artists, and get a glimpse of what they will offer the world.”
