“Everyday I have the opportunity to see students discover the depth and range of their talent and explore their passion for the arts. For a teacher and an artist, there couldn’t be a better place.”

“The Governor’s School is a jewel, not only for South Carolina but for our country. All of us should be proud of this school and celebrate it!”

Dr. Bruce Halverson

Dr. Halverson joined the Governor’s School in late summer of 2007. Previously, he served as the Dean of the School of Theatre at Florida State University and Chair of the Theatre Departments at the University of Illinois, Ithaca College, and several other universities. In addition, he has worked professionally with such theatres as A Contemporary Theatre (Seattle), Black Hills Playhouse, and The Great Lakes Theatre Festival (Cleveland). Augustana College (SD) named him President Emeritus upon his retirement, after leading his alma mater for six years. Halverson earned a Ph.D. in theatre history from the University of Washington (Seattle) and his scholarship has focused on developing opportunities for deaf theatre artists. He and his wife Nancy, who is also a theatre artist, have three sons.
