Petrea Warneck
Oboe, Chamber Music Instructor
Oboist Petrea Warneck performs extensively throughout the Carolinas as an orchestral and chamber musician. She is a member of the oboe section of the South Carolina Philharmonic and has performed frequently with the Charlotte, Charleston, Greenville, North Carolina Symphony Orchestras. A native of New York State, Ms. Warneck's musical career prior to moving to the Carolinas included membership with the Binghamton Symphony, Ithaca Opera Company and the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra. She also worked as a freelance oboist and had an active career in the field of arts management, first in New York City and then in Berlin, Germany, where she resided until relocating to the U.S. with her husband in 1993.
Ms. Warneck has a distinguished reputation as an oboe instructor in the southeast. Covering the Carolinas from east to west, she has a large private studio at home in Columbia and she is the oboe instructor at Furman University and the SC Governor 's School for the Arts in Greenville, SC. She has also taught oboe at the University of South Carolina-Columbia, Presbyterian College (Clinton, SC), and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Ms. Warneck is passionately involved in the performance of new music for her instrument and, active still as an Arts Administrator, in 1995 co-founded The Chamber Music Society of Wilmington (North Carolina). She served as the executive director for the first decade of the series and continues her affiliation with the organization as Executive Director Emeritus and the Principal Oboist.
Ms. Warneck holds a Master's degree from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor's degree from the Ithaca College School of Music. She credits her teacher and mentor of over 25 years, the late John Mack, former principal oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra, for her development as a musician and teacher throughout her career. In addition to John Mack she has studied/coached with Elaine Douvas, (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Linda Strommen (Indiana University), Peter Hedrick (Ithaca College) and Rebecca Nagel (University of South Carolina).
