Summer Academy Music Program
The Summer Academy Music Program is an intensive two-week training program for rising tenth grade students interested in improving their skills and knowledge in preparation for advanced study in the field of music. The comprehensive curriculum includes private lessons on individual instruments, master classes, and chamber music, as well as classes in music theory, music history, and conducting skills. The Summer Academy Music Program faculty brings to the school a vast range of experience in performance, teaching and scholarship. These dedicated artists and teachers are committed to the pursuit of their own work while imparting to their students their knowledge, technique, professionalism and experience.
Now in its eighteenth year, the Summer Academy Program is well-seasoned in the summer education of artistically gifted students of South Carolina. Academy alumni have distinguished themselves through their successes in colleges, universities and conservatories, as well as in arts careers.
The Summer Academy Music Program curriculum consists of performance study on your instrument and classes in music theory, history and musicianship. During Summer Academy, students have two hours of private instruction on an instrument or voice. They rehearse and perform in a chamber ensembles and attend a performance seminar in their area of study. In music theory, students learn about scales and harmony, while music history establishes an historical context for study of musical style. In musicianship class students practice score reading, sight singing and learn rudimentary conducting skills.
