Residential Visual Arts Admissions
Application
Applicant must send the following pieces with his/her application:
- A 9” x 12” color-based composition on paper using some aspect of color theory
- A 9” x 12” white paper with four black squares of equal size glued onto the paper. The composition should express “tension” using the positive and negative space
- A 9” x 12” drawing of two unrelated objects from direct observation (Please do not draw from a photographic resource.)
Research
Applicant must research three artists of his/her choice, one from each of the periods below, bring a printed sample from each artist and come prepared to discuss what interests him/her about it:
- Renaissance
- 1850-1950
- 1950-present
- Applicants may use books, magazines or the Internet. Some web resources:

Work
Applicant must bring the following to the audition:
- A three-dimensional piece created for the interview which demonstrates an awareness of form and space
- A two- OR three-dimensional piece created for the interview which best demonstrates the applicant’s artistic skills
- A self-portrait in pencil, drawn from life by using a mirror
- A sketchbook with 20 or more full-page drawings from observation done in the past 12 months
Drawing Workshop – 1.5 hours
Applicants will draw a still life while being observed by SCGSAH Visual Arts faculty.
Interview
Applicant will be expected to discuss the following:
- His/her work
- The work of the artist he/she researched
- His/her aspirations in the arts
