Sciences

The goal of the Science Department is to have students understand and apply inquiry processes to everyday problem solving, and understand the role science plays in the arts and humanities. All courses emphasize the development of scientific skills needed for living in an increasingly technological society and their relevance in all careers. These include understanding the language of science, making decisions about science-societal issues, problem solving, technical writing, and reading scientific materials, within the context of a mathematical and historical perspective. Science and technology become increasingly important as the health and prosperity of our society become more dependent upon them. It is no longer sufficient for a member of our society to be fluent only in scientific facts and information about the world in which we live. To be a scientifically functioning and contributing member of society, one must be able to think and make decisions about science-societal issues. To achieve this, science courses provide a variety of ways for students to learn not only the content, but also the problem-solving skills and analytical thinking ability necessary to become scientifically literate individuals.
