Teachers' Institutes

Since 2004, arts teachers from around the state have converged on the Governor's School campus for the Arts Teacher as Artist Institutes.These institutes originated as a professional development course for visual arts teachers to encourage their own creative and artistic growth, while providing them with concrete strategies for lesson plan development .

In 2005, the Institute, funded through the District Arts Curricular grants from the South Carolina State Department of Education, grew to encompass not only visual arts, but music and drama. A concurrent course, the Reedy River Writer's Retreat offers English/Language Arts teachers a similar opportunity.

The Institutes are designed to provide teachers the opportunity to engage creating their own works and to participate in critical analysis of process and product. The institutes are fully funded, including housing, meals and supplies, allowing faculty the opportunity to study a specific aspect of their art form on the beautiful Governor's School campus. Particpants earn graduate or renewal credits toward recertification.
