June 19 - 24 / June 26 - July 1

During this one-week program, passionate musicians grow their technical abilities, artistry, and confidence through:

  • Studying and performing on their individual instrument or voice area
  • Daily rehearsal and collaboration in chamber ensembles
  • Classes on technique, successful audition strategies, music theory, music appreciation, and rhythmic motion
  • Demonstration for parents and family at the end of the program

How To Apply

Students apply in 7th & 8th grade to attend in the summers following 7th & 8th grade. An online application process, which includes demographic and arts information, must be completed to be considered for admission. The online application portal will be used to request recommendations and upload other required materials.

Video Requirements by Instrument

Brass (Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba) 

Solo(s): Perform one solo (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos (1-2 minutes in length). These may be movements of pieces or one of the selections may be the All-State etude.

Scales: Perform a full-range chromatic scale and two (2) major scales that demonstrate range, tone and rhythm.

Concert Harp

Solo(s): Perform one solo (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos (1-2 minutes in length). Consider ASTA String Syllabus Vol. 2 for suggestions, if necessary. 

Scales: Play two (2) scales of your choice in a range appropriate for the instrument to demonstrate tone, technique and rhythm.

Percussion (Snare, Mallets, Timpani)

Choose one of the three percussion instruments listed below for the performance video:

  • Snare: Perform one solo/etude (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos/etudes (1-2 minutes in length).  These may be movements of pieces or one of the shorter selections may be the All-State etude. Demonstrate three rudiments from the 13 Essential Rudiments from the National Association of Rudimental Drummers.
  • Mallets: Perform one solo/etude (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos/etudes (1-2 minutes in length).  These may be movements of pieces or one of the shorter selections may be the All-State etude. Perform a full-range chromatic scale and two (2) major scales that demonstrate range, tone, and rhythm.
  • Timpani: Perform one solo/etude (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos/etudes (1-2 minutes in length).  These may be movements of pieces or one of the shorter selections may be the All-State etude. Be prepared to demonstrate tunings of standard intervals, ie. perfect 4th, perfect 5th, and octave.
Piano

Solo(s): Perform one solo (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos (1-2 minutes in length). Examples of ideal audition pieces are: 

  • An Invention or Prelude and Fugue by J. S. Bach
  • A sonata or sonatina movement by a Classical composer such as Clementi, Haydn, or Mozart
  • A character piece by a Romantic composer such as Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, or Grieg
  • Any modern composition

Scales: Play 2 major scales of your choice, two octaves, hands together

Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass)

Solo(s): Perform one solo (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos (1-2 minutes in length). These may be movements of pieces or a selection from the Region Orchestra audition material.

Scales: Play one major and one melodic minor scale (two or three octaves, as appropriate).

Voice

Solo: Perform (sing) one unaccompanied folk song, patriotic song, or religious song in a comfortable range that best shows the character and quality of your voice.

Woodwinds (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon)

Solo(s): Perform one solo (3-4 minutes in length) or two solos (1-2 minutes in length). These may be movements of pieces or one of the shorter selections may be the All-State etude.

Scales: Perform a full-range chromatic scale and two (2) major scales that demonstrate range, tone and rhythm.
