August Wilson’s Century Cycle, a series of ten plays chronicling the African American experience across each decade of the 20th century, stands as one of the most profound contributions to American theatre. Through richly drawn characters and poetic storytelling, Wilson captured the struggles, triumphs, and everyday lives of Black Americans with honesty and depth. Building on that legacy, Danielle Brooks’ Century Cycle Continues Monologue Competition honors Wilson’s vision by creating new opportunities for young performers to engage with the voices of playwrights of color. By connecting classic works with contemporary perspectives, the competition ensures that Wilson’s commitment to representation, artistry, and cultural truth continues to inspire and shape the next generation of theatre artists.
