The SCGSAH Junior Artist Piano Competition is for students in grades 8-10 and will be held in Smith Recital Hall on the campus of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, South Carolina. Competition performances are open to the public at no charge.
The SCGSAH Junior Artist Piano Competition is sponsored by the Bichel Foundation and the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.
Students will perform a memorized program from the standard classical repertoire, including a minimum of two contrasting pieces from the Baroque through Modern styles. Single movements are allowed, and repeats within the score are discouraged. Transcriptions are allowed, although they are subject to scrutiny (repertoire will be approved during the application process). There is no minimum performance time limit, although students will be given a maximum of twenty minutes for each audition. Entrants will receive written comments from each of the three judges.
- First Place: $1,500 Governor’s School Award
- Second Place: $1,000
- Third Place: $500
- Honorable Mention: $50
The decision of the judges is final. The judges reserve the right to withhold awarding one or more prizes if the performances do not meet a certain standard.
The SCGSAH Junior Artist Piano Competition is open to South Carolina residents who are in grades 8-10 at the time of the competition. Teachers of competing students do not have to be residents of South Carolina. Previous First Place winners are ineligible to compete in future JAPC auditions.
