Session Descriptions

Overview: Information will be provided about the SCGSAH Creative Writing Department courses and offerings, as well as what applicants can expect during the application and audition process. This 30-minute session includes time for a Q&A.

Everyone is a writer, but you may not even know it: Did you know that you are already a skilled writer? If you didn't, then learn how in the upcoming information session, "Everyone is a writer!" In this 30-minute session, discover the skills you already have as a writer and how to continue to strengthen and develop those skills.

Building Your Poetry Portfolio: This is a step by step walkthrough to putting together your poetry portfolio for the Creative Writing application. We'll focus on formatting your portfolio and answering any questions you have about the online application and portfolio submission in this 30-minute session.

Building Your Fiction Portfolio: This is a step by step walkthrough to putting together your fiction portfolio for the Creative Writing application. We'll focus on formatting your portfolio and answering any questions you have about the online application and portfolio submission in this 30-minute session.

Let's Talk About What You Read and Write: What authors do you read? Have you read anything else by that author? Why do you choose to write poetry/fiction? How do you describe your process? There are just some of the questions that may come up during a Creative Writing Interview. In this 30-minute session, learn how to talk about your reading and writing choices, as well as tips on the interview process. This session is best suited for students applying to the Creative Writing Academy or Residential High School programs.

Session Descriptions

Overview: In this 30-45 minute session, you will learn about courses and offerings in the SCGSAH dance programs. You will also hear about a typical day-in-the-life of our dance students, and learn about how to know if you are ready for the SCGSAH Dance program. We will also briefly discuss the application and audition process. This session is appropriate for any student interested in Residential High School Dance and/or Summer Dance.

Dance Application and Video Audition Q&A: Come prepared with questions you may have about completing your application, and learn about ways to prepare for the Early Decision (video) audition and the Regular Decision (live) audition.

Govie Saturday: Includes a 30-minute overview followed by a Q&A session with a Student Ambassador and other members of the Govie Community.

Session Descriptions

Am I Ready for the Residential High School Drama Program? In this 30-minute session geared towards 10th graders, you will gain a clear understanding of the application and audition process for the Residential High School, as well as what to expect from the program and from yourself should you be accepted.

Drama Summer Programs Overview: In this 30-minute session geared towards 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, you will gain a clear understanding of what the SCGSAH Drama department has to offer, as well as detailed information regarding the Academy and Arts Odyssey Drama application and admissions processes. 

Choosing Your Audition Monologue (Part 1) : In this 40-minute session, students interested in any of the SCGSAH Drama programs will learn where to look for audition material that is within the SCGSAH Drama guidelines, and how to choose or edit monologues that are suitable for auditions. Students will also learn about the helpful text work used for monologue audition preparation, beginning with identifying the circumstances and acting beats within the text. Content advisory: The monologues used as examples during this session contain themes of spousal loss and discussion of suicide.

Choosing Your Audition Monologue (Part 2) : For students interested in any SCGSAH Drama program, this 30-minute session continues the text work from Choosing Your Audition Monologue (Part 1) by focusing on objectives, tactics (actions), and obstacles. We strongly recommend attending Choosing Your Audition Monologue (Part 1) before participating in this session. Content advisory: The monologues used as examples during this session contain themes of spousal loss and discussion of suicide.

Selecting Your Audition Song: This 30-minute session is for students interested in any SCGSAH Drama program. Students will gain an understanding of what is expected of them in their SCGSAH Drama video or live audition in regard to singing. They will learn the types of songs that tend to lend themselves best to theatre auditions, as well as how to prepare for the singing portion of the audition.

Preparing For Your Interview: This 30-minute session is for students interested in any SCGSAH Drama programs. Students will gain an understanding what is expected of them in their SCGSAH Drama video or live audition in regard to the interview. They will learn the necessity of interview preparation, and the value of the interview as part of the SCGSAH Drama adjudication process. 

Govie Saturday: Includes a 30-minute overview followed by a Q&A session with a Student Ambassador and other members of the Govie Community.

Visual Arts

Session Descriptions

Overview: Learn more about the Visual Arts department, admissions process, and programs by attending this general overview. 

Beginning a Sketchbook Practice: In this 30-minute presentation, learn about daily activities you can adopt to not only build and strengthen your sketchbook practice, but to also improve your observational drawing skills over time.

How to Prepare Your Art for Mail-in Submission: Learn best practices in packaging your art compositions for mail-in submission, as well as tips for cutting costs for the mail-in submission, during this 30-minute presentation.

What is a Collage? Basics on Getting Started: In this 30-minute presentation, learn the basics of collage, discover examples of art that use this multi-media process, and find out how easy it is to get started.

Color Theory (Part 1): In this session, we will discuss the different dimensions of color as well as some basic color schemes seen in visual arts. This sessions will help prepare applicants consider the use of color when creating your Color and Collage Compositions as part of the mail-in submission component of the application process. Participants will also be provided a color mixing activity to practice your new learned knowledge about the dimensions of color. This session is beneficial for the Residential High School and Academy Summer Program applicants. Odyssey Summer applicants can also benefit from this session to learn more about how color can impact your collage composition.

Color Theory (Part 2): As a continuation of Color Theory Pt. 1, we will look at more advanced color schemes while continuing to understand the different dimensions of color. A new color mixing activity will also be offered to practice your continued learned knowledge about the dimensions of color. This sessions is beneficial for anyone who would like to learn more about color theory and how color can impact artwork.
