Recommendation Access Rights

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, a student has access to his or her educational records. SCGSAH complies with this law while still allowing families to choose whether or not to waive their right to view completed recommendations. Your choice to waive or not waive your right to view your recommendations in no way affects our consideration of your application.

Waiving Your Rights

If you choose to use our online recommendations, you automatically waive your right to view your completed recommendations. Over 95% of applicants each year choose this option. In fact, many teachers will not complete a recommendation unless the family waives the right to view the form. Please note, once you request a recommendation through our online system, your rights have been waived. SCGSAH will not be able to disclose the contents of our online recommendations to families.

Not Waiving Your Rights

If you do not waive your right to view the completed recommendations, do NOT use our online recommendation system. Instead, contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@scgsah.org. Provide the student's full name and South Carolina county of residence (if applicable) in the message, and let us know you do not waive your right to view the recommendation and are requesting an alternative to the online recommendation form.

Not waiving your right to the completed recommendation gives you access to your forms upon acceptance to SCGSAH. If you are considering not waiving your rights, we strongly encourage you to first check with your teachers. Remember, many teachers will not complete a recommendation unless the family has waived their right to view the form.

Recommendation Access Rights

As the student/parent/guardian, I understand:

- If I use the online recommendations in the application portal, I am automatically waiving my right to view the completed recommendations.
- I should not use the online recommendations if I do not wish to waive my rights. Instead, I should contact the Office of Admissions about alternatives to the online recommendation form.
- My choice to waive or not waive my right to view the completed recommendations in no way affects consideration of my application.
