Support South Carolina's most promising young musicians as they learn advanced musical skills through private instruction, ensemble training and music history and theory studies

The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities Foundation supports the Governor's School Music Department by funding needs not met by state operating funds, such as underwriting special programs, projects, and experiences offered at the school by providing financial and other assistance directly to the students:

Guest Artists

Guests artists play a valuable role in the classroom and make the Governor's School experience so unique compared to other schools.  In the 2022-2023 school year, the Foundation funded over $10,000 to bring professional guest artists to campus including:

Adam Sadberry, flute and educator (2021 Concert Artist Guild Winner)
Christian Howes, Jazz violinist
Robert Reardon, French Horn (National Symphony Orchestra, professor Peabody Institute of Music)
Oskar Espina Ruiz, Clarinet (UNCSA)
Gabriel Kahane, Composer and Songwriter
Jake Fowler, ('13 Alum) Bassoon (Arkansas Symphony Orchestra)
Douglas Temples,('12 Alum) Viola  (Former Faculty Augusta University Conservatory Program)
Caroline Diaz Chen, ('11 Alum) Viola (Touring Broadway Show Jagged Little Pill)

"Thanks to the continued support of the Foundation, the SCGSAH Music Department has been able to host amazing guest artists from around the country. Opportunities to work with elite musical artists in masterclasses, lessons, and to observe high-level artistry in guest recitals are invaluable to our students. Not only do these visits inspire and help to mold the students but they show what is possible as artists beyond the Governor's School. The ability to invite artists of this caliber allows us to differentiate ourselves from other high school programs around the state." - Deirdre Hutton, Music Department Chair.

Department Support

As a residential arts school, students have unique needs and opportunities, and the Foundation is committed to assuring access to those opportunities to all students. The Foundation is able to support special learning experiences and other costs. Last school year, the Foundation helped pay for adjudicators, jurors for college auditions, performance accompanists, and other resources.
